Edwjohn
[Based on the number of present e-mails, I have doubts about something else of you are regulate to work with this couple again. On or after I keep a few stuff I haven't yet disseminate to the group, I persistent it was time for an up-date. This isn't intended as an something we keep on this couple, but above a 'hodge-podge' of connections with them and their neighbors in Virginia. I illustration the above we learn about Edward and the town he and Elizabeth lived in, the above ordinary we are to find real clues to their heritage. I promote as without fail, a inexpensive, insight make amends for of ideas, on tenterhooks supported with emotive sources. And I will try my best to keep up with circulating responses to the ostentatious group. Fascination be more exciting to comeback to me only'; earlier than you only drink greedily a undivided number of the group -- now over 140. I next promote accepted reports of the numerous lines of ancestry from this couple, and others. This is a blonde fate for persons trying to make the connection to Edward and Elizabeth. Put on view what you keep -- substitute aficionado may keep the solution to your puzzle! I've included something else extracts from previous reports -- all are expressionless from the JOHNSON directory at my webpage:

The New Kent Realm Virginia Neighborhood
of Edward and Elizabeth JOHNSON

I admission where I not here off in EDWJOHNS -- with the question of one or two Edward Johnsons in New Kent Co.? -- based on the proximity of one Edward to William Atkinson who operated a dinghy on the Pamunkey Flow in 1684, seeing that the one we are researching is grow on Powhite Quagmire. Bonnie Flythe came up with substitute logical explanation in announcement publicized 9/2/99:
Linda asks: "The first person charged with in order the dinghy is William
Atkinson. Is he the awfully Wm. Atkinson, in the opposite direction neighbor of Edward Johnson in
method list 1689? If so, he lived on the Pamunkey Flow which was a
few miles from Powhite Quagmire. At all was Edward con on the Pamunkey Flow
IF he owned land in the opposite direction Powhite Swamp?
Bonnie's answer: "The dinghy man in 1689 was Benj. Buckley. Wm Atkinson seems to keep quit and possibly stimulated in the opposite direction Edward Johnson."

Susan Stewart discussed this awfully point in a letter to Dick Baldauf publicized April 1996: "The distance is not great with Powhite Quagmire and the Pamunkey Flow and grant is no way of sophisticated at this time specifically how the land of William Atkinson was to be found as a neighbor of Edward's. Atkinson can keep been to be found easterly on the way to the Pamunkey Flow from Edward's disembark. We next can be talking about the name of eloquent estate which would make it secular for Atkinson to keep land up to the Pamunkey Flow boundaries but not Edward.
The essentially interesting favorite subject about this is Col. Richard Johnson who owned disembark at Pamunkey Flow. Col. Richard in King and Emperor Realm was a neighbor of James Minge and it was this James Minge who on cloud nine in 1695 Thomas Mims and who next was a neighbor of Edward Johnson." [Dick bonus a note here: This sounds as if Minge lived in the medium with Richard on one side and Edward on the another side.]

Susan furthermore offers this warning: "I see that we may perhaps be getting misled with the refer to to King and Emperor Realm in view to the Colonel [Richard].
These territory boundaries were set in the same way as in time so he next can keep lived in what past was accepted as New Kent Realm... beside it began to institute in size."
[Dick adds: Hanover Co. documents are spurious for the awfully squeal.]

Recurring in this behavior but with a subject matter on SNEAD, Susan writes: "In
1664 Samuel Snead was occupation on the Pamunkey Flow in New Kent Realm and now is King William Realm. One of his contiguous neighbors was Capt. William Bassett.
... Susan Sneed who wed Thomas Renalls (Reynolds) next becomes an innate computation. Describe that the youngster of Capt. Christopher Clark and Penelope Johnson -
- Rachel "M", born in 1714 married as her first husband Thomas Moorman in
1729/30. Thomas Moorman was the son of Charles and Elizabeth (Reynolds) Moorman.
Bet this Elizabeth Reynolds is a teen of Susan (Snead) Renalls and her son is named following Susan's husband, Thomas Renalls." [He was for "Eliz. daugh' to Tho. Renalls Bapt 15 of Assert 1690-1" in the St. Peter's Borough Convey is the lot ensemble of Charles Moorman -- see CHAS/ELIZ in the Moorman directory of my webpage.]

"... furthermore during is a tie with the Sneeds to the Johnson family in this thorough Johnson/Clark line.... At that time evaluate that in 1664, Samuel Sneed Jr.
is a neighbor of Capt. William Bassett. Is this the awfully Capt. William Bassett or is it his son, next named William, who is seen as a neighbor of Edward Johnson and Thomas Mims in 1690? It would come into view to be the son but note that in this flanking duration these families keep stimulated spanking west from the Pamunkey Flow fine hair the Powhite Quagmire and Beaverdam Divide of the Chickahominy Flow.
Describe that in 1690 Edward Johnson is on show in the processioners' list fine hair with these eloquent names: Mr. Wm Bassett, Thomas Moorman, Thomas Snead and Tho.
Renalls.... Both on this list are Henry, Thomas, Martin and William Martin, fine hair with John Snead.
So during is substitute secure with the Sneads and the Johnsons, predating the marriage of Edward's youngster Penelope to Capt. Christopher Clark. It next predates the marriage of Penelope's youngster Rachel to Thomas Moorman, son of Charles and Elizabeth (Reynolds) Moorman. By 1695 Edward Johnson is aligned by a new neighbor, Thomas Mims. This Thomas Mims poverty be the begin of Thomas Mims Jr. who wed Mollyane Martin. All this inter-related activity is quite charmed.... in December 1734, Capt. Christopher Clark was named executor of the garden of Alexander Snead in lieu of Matthew Snead. This indicates a faster connection to the Sneads than the fact that Christopher's youngster married a descendent in Susan Snead Rennals way back in 1652."

Susan next picks up on connections to / with Alexander McKenney -- see my style MCKENEY in the Hodge-Podge directory that focuses on McKenney and Christopher Clark connections. In his letter to me April 1996, Dick Baldauf asked "Were you sagacious that grant was an history Daniel Johnson who was a neighbor of Alexander MacKenney? Susan wonders if Edward and Daniel are not brothers?... Your records... show he [McKenney] lived flanking to John Watson, symptomatic of that Michael [said to be Edward's son] was in the right close relationship to joint John's youngster Sarah Watson.... MacKenney was a Quaker but was in the same way as disowned."

Except trying to stay on the district of Edward and Elizabeth, I want to add one above of Susan's observations: "Moreover of you mentioned a Col. Richard Johnson at Pamunkey Collar in 1695. He is the one who had a youngster who wed a James Johnson, parentage without a template. Linda writes that Col. Johnson is on the first processioning list in St. Peter's Borough. Could he and his mystery son-in-law be substitute secure in this puzzle?

Hitchhiker Data lines

As far as I can reckon, Dr. Lorand is the source miserable Hitchhiker as Elizabeth's luminary. The St. Peter's inborn write down for four of their line identifies the father as "Elizabeth" only. Lately I saw a press out, purported weight to the marriage write down of Blisland Borough for Elizabeth's luminary.
Even, Chamberlayne, who transcribed something else vestry books, begins the one glaze Blisland Borough in 1721. He doesn't wrap any disconnect registry entries in this work, but does wrap them in some of his another works. Bishop Meade in v.1 of his giant history of VA Churches and peak families
(published 1857) can find nonentity from Blisland Parish; but he came on the cross the greater vestry book beside ultimate his second lion's share. A dependable of indexes and genealogical book dealers bungled to post any published work from Blisland registers. For that reason, I think we can surmise the inborn / leave-taking / marriage registers no longer keep on and weren't current at the time Dr. Lorand's ordered
'sources' were con their research. For that reason, we can't badge Hitchhiker as Elizabeth's luminary.

And without memo, we keep to look at another stuff for authentication of her luminary. The lack of WALKERs interacting with Edward in his New Kent Co.
town suggests we essentially should look at another families. Yes, grant are Hitchhiker families in New Kent Co. and some do joint into the strung out Johnson /
Clark line; but, my point is, none are inter-relating with Edward as we keep come to pretend in this invidiously interlock strung out family.

Plunder this speech one step exterior, I score the late quotes
from Susan Stewart's PTIIISSN who finds errors in Dr. Lorand's parentage of Elizabeth: "... Johnson furthermore goes on to say that George Hitchhiker was the son of Mr. Samuel Hitchhiker who signed the will of Sir John Johnston. George Hitchhiker, as we cherish, married Ann Keith, youngster of Quaker George Keith in Virginia. But says Dr. Joohnson, it was THEIR youngster Elizabeth (NOT George's sister) who married Edward Johnson of New Kent... Zenith problem: this overrides Doug Tucker's get of an Elizabeth baptized 13 JAN 1658 in Aberdeen as the youngster of Alexander Hitchhiker, the exxcommunicated priest of Old Machar Borough, who supported the Quaker movement. It is this hold close Elizabeth that Doug presents as the ensemble of Edward Johnson of New Kent. If Doug is right in this idea, it still is basic to find evince that this Alexander Hitchhiker family came to Virginia.
Second problem: the youngster Elizabeth assumed to be born to George Hitchhiker and Ann Keith can't be the ensemble to Edward of New Kent. She would keep been but a tot equally her first recorded youngster Thomas was baptized in 1680. So Dr.
Johnson helpfully is unacceptable about this,... But because the decoration is unrelenting that Elizabeth Hitchhiker married Edward Johnson, possibly the solution is that Elizabeth Hitchhiker, youngster of George and Ann (Keith) Hitchhiker, was the ensemble of Edward Johnson (JR.) of New Kent Realm. This is the son Linda has anticipated as being unrecorded."

Katherine Cochrane, who stumbled onto my webpage June 1998, e-mailed that Elizabeth, youngster of George Hitchhiker and Ann (Keith) married Stephen Dewey.
Even, she cites a CD as her source. She next followed up on my observe the Anglican priest, George Keith of Kiskeake Borough, York Co., was remarkably partnered to the greater Quaker George Keith. The Anglican priest time-honored a brazen in 1634 for transporting himself, his family and others in 1617. Count to the fluke, Kiskeake Borough was renamed Hampton Borough, the awfully district whose priest was Rev. Edward Johnson in the 1650s.

Edward, son of the Rev. Edward Johnson

My style EDWARDJ discusses the priest, Edward Johnson Sr., and Suzanne Johnston's JNSNABDN gives a chronology of Edward Johnson (Jr.) in York Co.
Bonnie Flythe absolutely provided the escort of the diary proving Edward Jr's inborn time as 1648. From Benjamin Weisiger's York Realm, Virginia Archives 1665-
1672, buzz 152:
"At a meeting Held for York Co. 13 Nov. 1669 -- Edward Johnson, having
attained age of 21, is to be posest of his garden by his keeper Maj.
Robert Baldrey. Edward Johnson acknowledges to keep time-honored of Mr. John
Piece 25/10/9 in part of his garden from Maj. Baldrey, next 1 steare"
[From v.1 Cavaliers & Pioneers, p. 252, 279 John Piece is a
trader who time-honored land in Yorke Co. He, or substitute John Piece, Gent.,
purchased land from Nicholas Merrewether in furthermore Lancaster Co. past to 1656, p.
340. The luminary Baldrey or any ordinary boring isn't in the schedule to this book.]

Bonnie to be found two in addition references to this Edward Johnson of York Co. in the greater book:
11 NOV 1670 John Cooper is reliable to pay Edward Johnson 323 lbs tob. Myhill, one of the witnesses for Johnson, is to be sworn. [p. 177]
1 DEC 1671 Mr. Robert Neale is reliable to pay Edward Johnson, assignee of John Cooper, 200 lbs tob. [p. 221]

"Myhill" seems a ordinary deceit for "Michael", but it appears as a luminary in another York Co. records so we shouldn't deposit time pursuing that part. Even, the luminary 'Cooper' is Maybe eloquent during. One of
Penelope's granddaughters, Sarah Anthony, married Thomas Cooper. Add the unrelenting words that Penelope is by some means coupled to Lady Shaftsbury, a.k.a.
Anthony Ashley Cooper -- who used the luminary JOHNSON equally escaping from England following 1679 --and we keep substitute interesting set of connections. But at this point in time, that's ALL grant is to this -- Cooper researchers are operating on
'how and if' these lines are related?

Approved one Edward Johnson was hidden Assert 2, 1684 [p.225 Disc and Registers of Charles Borough, York Realm, Virginia 1648-1789 by Landon C. Group, VA St Lib, 2nd reprint ed. 1984] and some members of our group illustration this is the minister's son born 1648. Even, according to Borough Coldness Diocese of Southern Virginia, Charles Borough as such wasn't fashioned until 1692. At one time five parishes covered the realm that was York Realm, for the northern front line strung out to the Potomac Flow in Virginia's elementary living. Until spanking research is put the last touches on, we do not cherish where the Edward Johnson d.1684 was occupation. One Edward Johnson owned land in York Co. as developing as 1627 and another Edward Johnson's were on cloud nine by men who time-honored land in York or neighboring counties. We don't persuasive cherish how long the minister's son remained in York following receiving his inheritance? He may well keep stimulated to a neighboring territory,
"state-owned", or persuasive returned to England or Scotland. Bonnie is currently operating with microfilmed York Co. records and will make an announcement any new insights with us.

Were they Quakers?

Edward's name is evidently dated in a list of accepted Quakers -- p. 146 Hinshaw's vol. of VA Manual of American Quaker Genealogy within the history of the Henrico Weekly Huddle, contributed by Mrs. Douglas Summers Brown: "... we would be making a overestimate to be sure about that Curles and its point town was the only neighborhood in this part of a set where Quakers were active and holding meetings beside 1699. A regard of the Convey of Saint Peter's district... is significant in that it names regular men... whose names next come into view habitually in the Quaker records. Along with these are: Charles Fleming, John Realy (Raley), Thomas Moorman, James Forested, Rice Hughes, Richmond Terrell, Sisilly Ellison, Alexander Mackeney, Thomas Stanley, Thomas Harris, William and John Johnson, Robert Ellison, Top story Robert Elleson, Robert Hughes and others.
How regular of these were Quakers in 1686 it is unruly to say, time some were
... unquestionable at a in the same way as date."

Certain everybody who came over with William Edmundson as Dr. Lorand says Edward did, would keep finished this list of peak Quakers. I Consider, but clearly can't prove, Edward's scarcity indicates one of two things: (1) he wasn't a Quaker -- emphatically, he, his ensemble Elizabeth and their youngster Penelope DO NOT Thoroughgoing where / any time in Hinshaw's giant report of Quaker records. Or (2) he died circa 1686. This date is the hold close time that Elizabeth
'as the father appears in the inborn write down for a youngster of Edward Johnson.
I've facing anticipated the 11year gap with Rachel b. DEC 1686 and Rebeckah b.
NOV1698 suggests Edward had two wives or grant are two Edward Johnsons represented in the inborn write down. As regular of you cherish, I lean on the way to an Edward Jr. born beside 1680 as both son of Edward and Elizabeth and begin of Rebeckah and Benjamin b. 1701. References to some of their another line come into view in deportee reports or within another reports on Edward and Elizabeth.
