You take a sip of your drink and you start reading a book, all through your own eyes. In other words, feel that cool drink sliding down your throat and think about the book you're reading and what story might pique your interest, imagine the sounds around you; are you associated here or disassociated? The fact is, you are disassociated and this is a very useful distinction to make. If you have ever been acquainted with people who are so in touch with their life that they literally ride an emotional roller coaster through the day, this is real association. These same people can become upset at every little thing and they're either very, very upset or they're very, very happy. Do you know people who are so disassociated from life that they have a near life experience? This association or disassociation is the way we code our world and what happens inside our head. Another good example is to think of yourself having a romantic meal with your partner. In this case, you had best be associated! On the other hand, if your boss is telling you off, wouldn't you rather be disassociated? In fact, certain jobs can lend themselves to this state of association or disassociation and a good example of that would be the job of air traffic controller. You most likely think that this job should be one of association, but think again; imagine a plane that is about to crash and if that air traffic controller is associated, he's going to be thinking, "Oh my word, you're all going to die a horrible death!" Instead, a disassociated air traffic controller is going to calmly deliver instructions such as, "Take the handle in front of you and turn it 45 degrees to the left, then press the big red button." He is able to remain cool and collected because he is disassociated from impending disaster.HOW ASSOCIATION/DISASSOCIATION RELATE TO GOAL SETTING There are many people who can picture their goals and can actually feel those goals, but in fact, they never achieve them. If we boil the unconscious mind down to what it actually wants from a goal; that might be spiritual enlightenment, a new house, a new car, more money, etc. Regardless of what the goal actually is, the unconscious mind focuses on how it will feel to achieve that goal. This ability to feel our goals without actually achieving them can result in our thinking becoming automated. People learn by default and the brain operates from the principle of least effort. If we fail to take control in how our actions relate to our thinking, association and disassociation will create our responses to our world. window" = {lang: 'en-GB'}; (function() { var po = document.createElement('script'); po.type = 'text/javascript'; po.async = true; po.src = 'https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script'); s.parentNode.insertBefore(po, s); })(); The post Are You Associated or Disassociated? appeared first on NLP Training.
